– Jagua: A unique tropical fruit –

Jagua: a fruit unlike any other

Le Genipa AmericanaGenipa, also called jagua, is a fruit from the tropical forests of South America. Edible, fragrant, and dense, it has been known for millennia by Native Americans for a particular use: it colors the skin a deep, temporary blue. It is also called Küpé, Huito, or Jenipapo depending on the region: men, women, young and old, everyone gets Genipa tattoos!

A natural pigment discovered by the Amazonian peoples

Among many indigenous peoples, the jagua fruit is central to stories, rituals, and daily life. Its juice is used to decorate the body: lines, geometric symbols… The tattoos last a few days or a few weeks depending on the freshness of the fruit.

In myths, it appears sometimes as an everyday fruit, sometimes as an element capable of revealing the invisible: an anaconda-woman, a spirit, a transformation. The jagua is both drink, symbol and color.

Jagua pulp and traditional bowl

Why does it color the skin?

When the fruit is opened and exposed to air, its flesh slowly oxidizes, and the initially light-colored pulp turns dark blue. The same process occurs when applied to the skin: the superficial layer of the epidermis reacts naturally with the juice, and within a few hours, a midnight blue shade which intensifies before fading over the days. The fruit's molecules bind to the skin's proteins thanks to oxygen, and this is what gives it this beautiful color that resembles that of permanent tattoos.

The Jagua selected by JAGWA

The fruit we use comes from Guyane françaisePicked very fresh and sorted by hand, some fruits are intentionally left on the tree to feed the birds, allow the seeds to spread and the forest to regenerate.

We then process the pulp ourselves, using traditional methods. It's an almost physical connection with each fruit: those we press today will provide the lines and shadows for your temporary tattoos tomorrow.

An ancient tradition, a living art

Through the jagua, an ancestral gesture meets a contemporary expression of tattooing. On one hand, the memory of peoples Tropical forests; on the other, your own stories, traced in blue on the skin for a few days. A story that continues to be written and rewritten.
